GWC students met to create background scenes for mystery video game they are creating from Scratch & create a short presentation on inspirational leaders within the tech industry.
The student’s overall goal is to create, as best they can, a mystery game with some form of coding. Due to school systems regulating all websites and not allowing students to download other programming languages to learn with, I had to research many websites to code on. The first step though was to teach the art of pseudocode. This is where you get a piece of paper and as best you can plan out what you want your code to do. This helps to get students mind into thinking about each line or step that the code will have to take to get the sprites in Scratch to interact or move across the background. Scratch is an MIT coding program that is free to the public. Better yet it is also a website that is not banned for the school students!
The goal of this was to have the students start applying learned skills such as running into coding challenges and coming up with solutions to overcome them.
The second half of the meeting students were tasked with the project of finding inspirational leaders within the technology industry. Each student took the time to gather a short presentation to share with the other students what was most inspiring about the person they chose and how it can motivate them to pursue things that might look challenging in their future.
The second goal of this meeting was to help build confidence within the students by having them present out loud, find common ground amongst each other with what can motivate or inspire them, and awareness to other role models that they can now find interest in.
Hope you enjoyed reading about this project & thanks for reading!
If you didn’t know I am not a great cook. I know how to make pasta and mash potatoes and that’s about it. Even then when I used to set them on the table for my siblings to eat, they would look at it like “I know our mommy did not make THIS” ! By that point, I had to threaten them to eat it. (haha!) Anyways I’m not really that good at it. This past weekend I attempted to make something I would actually like to eat, Chicken Soup, and I’ll share the experience with you.
Materials (Grocery Items) :
4 Chicken Legs
3-5 Chicken Broth Cubes (depends on taste)
Salt & Pepper to taste
4 stalks of Celery
1 bag of Baby Carrots
1 can of cut green beans
1 can of Diced Tomatoes (Oregano, basil flavor)
1 large pot- preferably around a 6quart size
Stove (I have been watching a lot of minimalist TV and they all don’t have stove tops so just want to let you know it’s required.)
Using the large pot add water to fill the pot halfway (approximately 4-6 cups).
Heat one eye on medium-high heat ( number indicator being a 7) & place the pot with water on top
Add the chicken to the pot and set a timer for 20 min
While the chicken is cooking it is time to chop up that celery
Rinse the celery & the bag of carrots
Place the rinsed carrots in a bowl
Chop up celery with your cutting board and knife to your desired shape and set aside in the same bowl as the carrots
Chop up potatoes with your cutting board and knife to your desired shape and set aside in the same bowl as the carrots & celery
After 20 minutes has passed I usually take off the parts of the chicken that are floating at the top with a spoon
Now time to add the 3-5 Chicken Broth Cubes
Add the celery and carrots and potatoes to the broth
wait 25-35 min and turn stove heat to medium ( number indicator being a 4)
Use a fork to see if it will go through the potatoes in the broth if it goes through please proceed to the next steps if it does not cook for 15 more min at a time
Now the soup is almost complete yay! phew all that work. Now use the can opener and add the Cut Green Beans and Diced Tomatoes.
now enjoy! and if its nasty well all I have to say is practice makes perfect !
I love eating this soup especially when I am sick. It has plenty of vegetables and I am drinking my fluids at the same time. I hope you enjoyed making this soup as well and enjoy!
Comment below any soups that you enjoy and maybe you can help me increase my cooking knowledge!
Today I am here to go over a new Amazon purchase. I was in the kitchen talking to my husband about what I recently just got in the mail and my husband’s friend was on the phone with him and she was also intrigued by the purchases I made. (At least someone was listening to me lol jk).
If you don’t know I am in the military and I purchase so many items on Amazon because I do not always have time to go buy them in the store on my Full-Time schedule. As honestly most people on a full-time schedule it is easier to save time by just ordering on Amazon so you can spend more time doing what you actually like.
So honestly in this Amazon purchase, I ordered quite a bit of things. Just to run down the list I got an Instant Pot, a wolf print shower curtain, a box of assorted cookie snacks, Eco Styler gel, Denman brush, Stylist Sprayers Atomic Spray, and a Bankers Box Decorative (organizational box with compartments).
I got the Instant Pot because I have been watching the GottLove Youtube channel and they showed it and my husband and I enjoy steamed vegetables and we suck at making rice. So a kitchen appliance that can help us with cooking seems very convenient for us.
I got the wolf print shower curtain because that is Stefan’s favorite animal and it’s important to me that our apartment feels like our space and he liked it as well.
I got the assorted cookie snacks because this is necessary to get through busy work days. Sometimes breakfast is missed and this will be the backup support or just a little hungry still after lunch.
I got the Eco Styler gel, Denman brush, and Stylist Sprayers Atomic Spray because these are necessary for me to get my hair to slick down into a low poof ball bun type of thing. I might make a video on how I do this but I was having a hard time getting my natural hair which is like type4something to lay down and become more “tamed” for military standards and what not. The gel never cakes up and trust me I apply sooo much of it. The brush is the only one that actually gets through all my hair and about every 6 months I get a new one. Now the Spray is one I saw once and then when I came across it on Amazon I was like “oh yes!” I have to get this and when I got it I was thoroughly impressed. It is like a mist of water on your hair. Also when you pull the trigger or lever that it has it continues to spray more of a mist. I like this because when I spray water on my hair it is generally going to be a couple sprays so this helps my fingers from becoming tired of spraying before I have even begun styling my hair.

This week in the Girls Who Code meeting we started working towards developing our Computer Science Impact Project. The students this year expressed that they would like to create a mystery game. A lot of my students from grades 6-8th grade. They expressed how they felt creating this game would show other kids in their school that coding can be fun and how even though they are young they can create something awesome to share with others.
To get this project started we planned what we wanted the end result to look like in the game. This was to give vision and creativity to the possibility of what we could come up with. It also helps me as the facilitator decide what platform might be the best to use based on the needs of the game. Because of this, I decided that GameMaker Studio 2 might be the best platform to create a mystery game with magic, potions, etc.
Teaching my students how to code one of the biggest challenges I am trying to avoid is the students feeling like the project is overwhelming. To dive right into coding the game I feel would not be the best decision. I decided to have them go through a walkthrough tutorial that we go through together where they create games that will give them skills to apply to the game they wish to create. The first game we are working on is replicating a shooter game. They created a sprite (or character) that can shoot out at enemies.
By creating this game students have learned how to create movement. They are learning to debug their code, find errors in their code. They are enjoying the process of building a game and I am proud of them for it.
Comment below if you have ever played any games? What types do you like?
Girls Who Code is a non profit organization that hopes to bridge the gap in the lack of women that have computer science degrees. The website GirlsWhoCode.com is very informative in the fact that they list a lot of facts and statistics about how successful the program is.
There are two parts to the program; one you can participate in the school club or secondly, the summer immersion program. I participated in the Summer Immersion program and it was AMAZING. I learned so many things about how computers work and how there are soooooooo many jobs that are computer related. The Girls Who Code program WAS NOT all about forcing girls into computer science. It was about bringing awareness to what computer science actually is. So many people think “omg thats about sitting at home in your mom’s basement hacking the world for hours all lonesome like”, but its really not. Computer Science coding has so much more to it. With this new segment on my blog I hope to share my experience and also bring awareness to computer science as well.
This year I have decided to start a GWC Club as an GWC Alumni. I feel it is the best way to give back to all that GWC has done for me. With that said while I live in Arkansas, I will be creating a GWC Club on the Air Force base I work at for a year and blogging the whole experience so look forward to it!
Comment below some activities or programs you have participated in that have influenced your life!
If you didn’t know my birthday just recently passed. I chose to have it at Buffalo Wild Wings. I invited some of my new friends I met from the Mary Kay party and some older friends that I’ve known since I’ve been in Arkansas. It was fun and everyone had a good time. Surprisingly my boyfriend Stefan also made it back in time from his TDY in Florida for my birthday get together. That was pretty cool because he was pretty sure he was going to have to miss it and he wasn’t happy about that. So, all in all, I had a good birthday!
Also, I got some unexpected gifts from Liz, Simpson, Yadira, Stefan, and my mother! Yay! I got gift cards to go shopping and eating two of my favorite things lol and here are pictures of more gifts I got from Liz. I like how sometimes when I get gifts my face always looks like “what is this?”. But I appreciated all of them!
From Yadira, I got a makeup pallet which arrived in my mailbox. She knows I am into makeup and like to play around in it and see if I can one day get better at it lol.
From my mother, I got an Alexa echo dot which also came straight to my mailbox. I love getting things in the mail. Alexa is funny.
From Stefan I got my dinner paid for like the gentleman he is, and he surprised me by buying me an $800 camera so I can learn to take better pictures and videos for my blog and our soon to come vlogging adventures.
I am thankful for everyone coming out to my birthday dinner and all the gifts I received !!! Thank Yall for a great birthday!!!
Comment below what you are planning to do for your next birthday!
I remember back when I was in high school when my parents had the LA Fitness Gym subscription. I would have these phases where I was like I have to try this class and that one and too that one too. I used to try the hip-hop classes because I can’t dance. I would go to the cycling class because my father went. I would try the yoga class so I can get some inner strength and calm my mind.
Point is I think I am always going through these phases of trying out classes and workout routines. This past week I went to the library and picked up this yoga CD that had morning, afternoon, and nighttime routines. I went ahead and tried it out with Stefan one morning straight out of bed and this is what it looked like:
Comment below some of your favorite workout routines!
I went to my first baseball game! I was volunteered to help out at the local baseball game in the downtown area. I worked the concession stand helping customers order hot dogs, BBQ nachos, soda’s, etc to enjoy the game. I got to work along my shop members as well. Even though I did not see much of the game I still had fun and enjoyed the fireworks later that night! I also walked away with a neat souvenir cup.
Comment below some of your favorite activities or events to go to! Hopefully next time I will actually order a hot dog and get to enjoy the game too!
Volunteering is something that everyone should take a chance to do at least once. You might find that you really enjoy helping others and one day can start a non-profit organization. Some of you might find that uhhhh its not as fun as you thought but then I would just suggest trying out a different volunteer opportunity. Volunteering is honestly as fun as you make it. I would also suggest inviting your boyfriend or girlfriend and other friends because it helps the time pass by faster if the volunteer activity is requires physical labor.
The last volunteer opportunity Stefan and I took advantage of was August 1 2017 from 0800 to 1100 we were apart of the Habitat for Humanity Re-Store! You can see pictures on my Instagram account linked in the about me page or just view the pictures below!
The way that Habitat for Humanity works is that the houses they build are 100% from donations. The employees are paid through the efforts of the Re-Store which is basically like a thrift store items are donated and then sold to the public to pay the salaries of the employees so that houses can still be built for those who can’t afford one.
Today we are going to talk about the ways we call become more productive. It’s not just you it is me too. I can’t tell you how many times I struggle with just waking up early because I don’t feel like it. It is not that I do not feel blessed to wake up but waking up deals with the pressure of making the new day just as productive if not more than yesterday. Who else feels like this gives you pressure?
But how about when the day is winding down? I find that the part of the day I enjoy the most is when I have actually had a productive day and I get to get in my bed and wind down for the night. But doesn’t it feel so much better if you actually did have a productive day? It does!
I went to Micheal’s, the Arts&Craft Store, the other day and purchased the first three tools to help combat our problem.
Goals Planner: It is easier to move closer towards our goals if we outline the reasons why we are making it our goal. It makes goals more personalized giving us a greater chance of achieving them. This is something that helps me reach goals faster.
Journal: This helps to jot down ideas, develop ideas, and write thoughts.
Monthly Planner: This is where we write down all the things that are pretty much consistent for example bills, chores, and exercise days. Knowing when everything should get done on a monthly planer allows for the budget to take less surprises, the house chores not to become chaos, and the body to stay in shape.
More things to get productive include:
Setting a specific time to sleep and wake up helps the body get into the routine that is best.
Eat regularly. I know this sounds ridiculous but so many times we forget to eat on these days we get super busy running errands or just getting so focused in our work we forget to eat.
Share your plans with friends and family. Don’t worry about the comments they might share that seem counter productive but focus on the advice they share and let them share their plans as well. It could give you an idea of things that might be worth changing.
Listen to motivational speeches. This is something that I do every night. Today we don’t have to get all our motivation from a mentor but we can find it for our self on YouTube. Plus its free and you can listen to some really good ones as they are needed.
